Vivian Maier was an American amateur street photographer who was born in New York but grew up in France, and after returning to the U.S., worked for about forty years as a nanny in Chicago. During those years she took about 100,000 photographs, primarily of people and cityscape most often in Chicago, although she traveled worldwide, taking pictures in each location.

WELCOME VIS LIT class of 2011!
Hello class!
This blog will be the forum for conversation, questions, a place where assignments will be posted, and a community can exist outside the classroom. Please sign in to be co-authors by this coming lab day- Jan. 12th. I look forward to the class this Spring.
In addition-
please have the following read by class on wed-
from the Horenstein book-
Black & White Photography: A Basic Manual – Chapter 1 and the short section on “Photograms” (in my book it is pages 191-193)
this is a total of 8 pages- so i expect everyone to read these pages.
As far as the readings are concerned, I do not intend to have quizzes on the readings unless it is clear that during discussion of the material covered in the readings that no one has read- in which case I will give a short quiz for each reading assignment that will be factored in to the participation grade.
ALSO- Scott will discus with you photograms on monday- On wed lab (jan 12th) we will be doing the walk through of the lab and will jump right into making photograms- thus- you will need things to lay on top of the photo paper (which you will also need to bring)-
some suggestions:
tissue paper
plastic wrap
translucent objects
glass
these things should be thought out- not just whatever you have in your pockets- think of what you are interested- and make these photograms conceptual as well as visually beautiful.
we will go over this more in class on wed and I will hand out the schedule for the rest of the semester.
ok so for wed jan 12th-
read chapter 1 and section on photograms
have new years resolution in sealed envelope
bring photo paper
bring objects to lay on top of paper
bring your 35 mm camera if you have it so we can start checking to see if they work.
